The Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT)

KICT is a government-funded research institute dedicated to the development and practical application of technologies for civil engineering, construction and national land management. Its research covers infrastructure, water and environmental engineering, smart construction, carbon neutrality and resource circulation. 

Within KICT, the Department of Environmental Research develops advanced technologies addressing water pollution, waste, air quality and greenhouse gas emissions. Its main research areas include water and wastewater treatment, desalination and water reuse, microplastics and emerging contaminants, resource recovery and advanced environmental treatment processes. KICT also has extensive experience in pilot- and demonstration-scale testing and the field application of environmental technologies.

Contribution to EmerGO

KICT contributes to the review of existing data and regulations related to micro- and nanoplastics in Korea and supports the processing of multimodal sensor data through machine-learning-based data-cleaning methods. It also develops and evaluates advanced treatment processes for micro- and nanoplastics, including oxidation and ozonation, ceramic membrane separation and adsorption using sustainable materials, and provides experimental data for process optimisation and treatment selection.
